What's in your water?

January 19, 2019

Water is life, but todays tap water supply has a wide range of contaminants like lead and arsenic which can adversely affect your health even in small quantities. So what is the best way to avoid this? Some people may say bottled water, but that also has impacts in your health due to the plastic that is used to package them, some containing BPA which affects your hormones. There is also an increasing environmental impact from drinking bottled water. An alternative that I have found that is both good for you and the environment is to use a reverse osmosis system at home and carrying glass bottles to refill.

In reverse osmosis, untreated water, flows through a series of passive filters, meaning there doesn't need to be any power applied to the system. There is a semipermeable membrane which is rated at 0.0001 micron (equals to 0.00000004 inch!) and carbon filters which remove the bad contaminants, odor, color, bacteria and even viruses. This is the same method used to make bottled water, it is so effective that it can even desalinate salt water.

So how do you know if a reverse osmosis system is right for your home? Here are some simple steps to find out:

1. Find your local water utility company consumer confidence report (CRR) by going to their website. Unfortunately you will find that the EPA allows for a certain level of contaminants called "Maximum Contaminant Level" (MCL). This means our water can have radioactive and inorganic contaminants such as: Arsenic, Barium, Copper, Lead and more.

2. Once you determine whats in your water, find out if reverse osmosis removes those contaminants. Here is list published by the Water Quality Association of contaminants removed by RO systems.

3. Purchase the reverse osmosis of your preference, make sure to check the published list of contaminants removed. I use the one below from APEC Water Systems which is 5 stage, made in the USA and very simple to install under the kitchen sink.

Since reverse osmosis also removes important minerals needed for your body, I recommend drinking mineral sparkling water once in a while and making sure your diet is balanced as always. Thats it! a safe and effective way of consuming water and eco friendly too.
